It was founded in 1988 as a result of sustained community protest against the former Fairlea Women’s Prison in Victoria. Today, Flat Out remains committed to that same activism. We believe that all people have the right to live free from violence, including state violence. We believe that prisons do not keep us safe from violence, because prisons are violence. We are proud to support and advocate alongside women, trans and gender diverse people to get out and stay out of prison, and live free from violence, including state violence.
