Tribune has been a broadcasting pioneer from the beginning. WGN Radio, Chicago, signed on the air in 1924. KTLA-TV, Los Angles, became the first television station west of the Mississippi in 1947. WPIX-TV, New York, and WGN-TV, Chicago, signed on the following year. The company has a history of innovation, including radio’s first remote broadcast, television’s first live sporting event, and the invention of instant replay and live aerial news coverage. Tribune TV stations recently installed the latest digital technology to ensure viewers the highest-quality images and sound. Today, Tribune is one of America’s largest and most respected broadcasters. Tribune Broadcasting owns and operates 23 major-market television stations and reaches more than 80 percent of U.S. television households. The group is anchored by WGN America, which can be seen in more than 70 million U.S. households via cable and satellite services. Thirteen Tribune stations are affiliates of The CW. Seven are FOX affiliates.
