Boulder Jazz Dance Workshop LLC Information

The Boulder Jazz Dance Workshop provides a non-competitive, supportive, and above all inspiring, atmosphere for intermediate through professional level dancers. Dancers choose their own curriculum at the BJDW - there is no required schedule so the program can be geared towards the student's individual interests and budget. Co-sponsored by Boulder Body Wear and the University of Colorado Department of Theatre & Dance, the BJDW is held each summer on the CU Boulder campus. The Two-Week Intensive consists of - you guessed it - two weeks of classes, for ages 15 through adult, in jazz dance, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical jazz, modern dance, ballet, turns, improvisation and more. There are performance track classes for dancers who choose to perform and/or choreograph in the workshop's full theatrical dance production. In addition, there is a separate Weekend Workshop for ages 12 through adult, offered for 3 days: Friday July 17 - Sunday July 19, with separate classes for teachers on July 18th & 19th. The BJDW started in 1978 with the idea of providing a supportive and growth-oriented environment where dancers could study jazz dance and perform. 37 years later this idea has remained intact, yet the BJDW has changed and grown so much that at times we wonder if our name still fits. Modern and Hip Hop are integral parts of our program. Each morning Ballet is offered. In terms of jazz styles, our focus is wider than the early years, with an emphasis on contemporary jazz styles including lyrical jazz - although some of our teachers do draw from classical jazz and others may whip out some 80s & 90s inspired combos! Rather than attempting to strictly define jazz, the BJDW provides students with diverse classes with unique dance artists who teach in their own styles.
