The West Australian Music Teachers' Association, established in 1910, is the oldest surviving Association of music teachers in Australia. Its main objectives are to promote and develop the teaching, practice and study of the art of music and to safeguard conditions and general aspects of studio music teaching for its members. The longevity of the Association is due to the dedication of members who, throughout its 100 years, have generously given their time and talents to further the aims of the Association. In 1924 the Music Teachers' Association held its first Eisteddfod or Music Festival. Under various titles, this event has been held almost annually since that time. Now known as the Recital and Concerto Competition, it provides the opportunity for young instrumentalists and singers to perform in public in a concert situation. For those interested, the 2010 publication "What Harmony is This?", written by Ronda Jamieson and David Hough, outlines the 100 year history of the Association. The book is available for sale at the WAMTA Office.
