Mask performances, workshops We make masks … and from the masks come stories. They may be happy stories or sad, boisterous or poetic. A character comes to life with the making of a mask … a relationship grows. With Theatre Transformations, these masks speak to you in many languages and none. The masks tell stories that transform how an audience understands the world. Theatre Transformations run by Tracey Boot, is a French –Scottish masked theatre company based in Chambery in Savoie, France. The company was originally created by Tracey Boot and Jacky Ridell in 1990 in Manchester, England. Tracey graduated in Theatre Studies from the University of Manchester, where she was influenced by ideas from musical theatre to Mike Leigh. Subsequent meetings with the famous French mime actor, Jacques Lecoq and his methodology for using physical theatre, movement and mime to convey meaning, drew Tracey into the art of directing, while from the Italian Donato Sartori and Mike Chase she learned mask-making and exploring the possibilities of mask in contemporary theatre. About our masks For us, our masks are alive with possibilities. Once created (and we feel they have a say in their own creation!) we live with them, we try to get to know them, explore their potential. Some masks are easy to get to know, as are some people and others are closed and resistant to prying. I came to mask making quite quickly, initially due to the costs involved in buying masks but once I started making my own, I just got hooked! I began by making half-face masks in the classic traditions of the Commedia dell’Arte, as taught by my teachers: Mike Chase and Donato Sartori. As time went by, I felt the need to develop my own style.
