Sustainable Reefs is a 100% Australian owned and operated marine aquaculture company specialising in the research and production of Australian tropical reef coral. We are committed to ensuring the long term sustainability of the world's coral reef eco-systems. Sustainable Reefs was launched in 2012 in Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia. The company founders recognised a distinct lack of sustainable coral collection practices in reefs all around the world. As a result Sustainable Reefs was established and together with our research partners we are developing a sustainable approach to coral production for the world's coral reef re-plantation projects and the thriving demand from the aquarium trade. This demand is having a massive effect on coral reef eco-systems with "take only" coral fisheries around the world and our aim is redress this situation. We are building a world-class proprietary coral culturing facility to accelerate the growth rates of marine coral. Using the proprietary techniques we have developed over the past ten years we can maximise the growth rates of the coral in our facility, thus shortening the time required to reach the required size. Coral fragments will be removed from mother coral colonies, similar to taking a cutting from a tree, and grown out in our computer controlled facility. This will be the largest coral aquaculture operation of its kind in the world and will provide unprecedented research opportunities with national and international exposure. It will have a unique ability to accelerate coral growth using proprietary system automation techniques no one else has, a world first, class leading facility for Australia. The facility will play a role in climate change research and predicting how it will affect the corals of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Dedicated tanks will be provided for researchers to experiment and test the effect of changing acidification, temperature, light, nutrification, and other environmental conditions on coral and other marine species. This will help in identifying climate change resistant genes and how we can help address the issue of global coral reef decline.
