SupportWorks Information

As recognized by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, peer support is an important part of recovery from mental illness. our programs are open to everyone and no specific diagnosis or medical record is required. Our philosophy is that peer support is supplementary to professional health care and not a replacement. We provide: Peer support Awareness about mood disorders Education about coping skills for living with mental illness Opportunities for practicing new coping skills in a safe environment A community support network Access to self-help resources SupportWorks began in 2009 with one weekly peer support group for people living with mood and anxiety disorder. With a passion for helping each other and ourselves we have become a fully registered not-for-profit organization offering five support groups a week and we have managed to help over 1000 adults living with mental illness in Calgary. SupportWorks has always been comprised of 100% volunteers. Many of whom have personal experience with mental illness, including our support group facilitators. Our team members have been successful in building a strong relationship with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and with the community. Our commitment to creating a long-term positive impact and reducing the negative stigma surrounding mental health issues has lead us to engage with the community to understand challenges and provide information regarding mental illnesses.
