Sunfed Meats Information

Sunfed Limited was a New Zealand food-technology and advanced manufacturing company known for clean-label, whole-cut plant-based proteins. Conceived by founder and CEO Shama Sukul Lee in 2014 and incorporated in 2015, Sunfed created meat-like products from regenerative ingredients using proprietary hardware and in-house manufacturing processes. Sunfed engineered a vertically integrated cold-chain facility in Auckland, producing minimal-ingredient, allergen-free products with taste, texture, and nutrition comparable to animal meat. Flagship products included Chicken Free Chicken™, Bull Free Beef™, and Boar Free Bacon™. The company was initially funded by Hayden Lee, who invested capital at inception and enabled the highest-risk early R&D phase. Following technical breakthroughs, Sunfed secured two institutional capital raises - a $1.5m seed round and a $10m Series A - to fund market launch, expand manufacturing capability, further innovation and enter Australia. Sunfed built a global IP portfolio with granted and active patent applications across New Zealand, Australia, Europe, the UK, Hong Kong, and the United States. Since market launch, products were nationally ranged across the major Australasian supermarket groups - Woolworths (NZ & AU), Foodstuffs and Coles. Founder: Semi-Finalist, New Zealander Innovator of the Year (multiple years); recipient, PETA Australia International Women’s Day Award (2021). In January 2026, Sunfed concluded via a solvent, orderly wind-up, returning surplus capital to shareholders, meeting all employee entitlements, and with no creditors. The decision reflected a strategic divergence with its lead VC investor, whose preference for software-style valuation growth did not align with scaling deep-tech manufacturing and FMCG infrastructure.
