The Spirit began with James W. Beller, an entrepreneur in Charles Town, who published the first edition on Wednesday, July 17, 1844. Unlike so many news organizations today, the Spirit remains family-owned and not part of some vast media chain headquartered far away. West Virginia native Craig See purchased the Spirit more than a decade ago. His family also owns the Hampshire Review, an award-winning weekly 60 miles away in bucolic Romney. Robert Snyder has guided the Spirit since 2011 and now holds the title editor-publisher. A native of Baltimore, he is an honors graduate of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County who has lived in West Virginia since 2004. Formerly an art teacher in Baltimore, he is not only an award-winning writer and reporter but also an editorial cartoonist and comic strip artist. He lives with his family in Ranson and may be reached at rob@spiritofjefferson.com. Latest e-Edition
