Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History Information

The Southern Museum, in association with the Smithsonian Institution, is a premier metro Atlanta museum. Home to the locomotive the General, the Civil War-era steam locomotive captured by Union spies during the Great Locomotive Chase. Also home to the Glover Machine Works exhibit, featuring the only fully restored belt-driven locomotive assembly line in the country. In addition to our permanent collection, we also have rotating special exhibits and the Jolley Education Center with interactive displays, train simulators, and the Merci Boxcar. We provide regular educational programming including pre-k programs weekly, a bi-monthly Homeschool Day, and on-going tour access for larger groups. We host several annual events that highlight modern trains and model toy trains, providing nostalgic, family-friendly fun!
