SL Mobility has been closely working with the Rotterdam University and the University of Moratuwa, as well as the Government of Sri Lanka with the principle objective of making the electric three wheeler (E3W) a success story. Looking into the future, SL Mobility has an ambitious four facet development & expansion plan along the dimensions of electric conversion, battery manufacturing, charging stations and EV assembly & manufacturing. The high level projections of the company for economic contributions include following: The company intends to make inroads to the development of home-grown, sustainable e-mobility solutions that deploy advanced technology, local talent and resources. As a starting point, SL Mobility will import the main components required for the electric conversion and assemble the product using the company's workshop facility, and thereafter progressively embark on 100% manufacture of the E3W using local resources. It is the intention of the company to initially cater to domestic market requirements by importing battery cells and producing Lithium Ion Battery (LIB) packs in Sri Lanka using the local workforce, and subsequently explore the potential of exporting them to the international market. Through the envisaged development plan, SL Mobility intends to create high-skilled and high-valued employment opportunities accounting for approximately 2,000 jobs by 2020 (1,000 for e-conversion and 1,000 for battery packing). In the medium term, SL Mobility aims to introduce an advanced Lithium Ion Battery that can be charged during off-peak hours and used during the peak time, which will help ease the burden on the national grid, as currently CEB has to incur very high per unit costs to generate electricity during peak hours. With support from Government and Private franchise organizations, the company intends to set-up and expand the electric charging stations network in Colombo and other main cities.
