Regatta Sailing Academy Information

Regatta Sailing Academy was established by Mike and Christine Lawton in 1996. Their aim was to introduce as many people as possible to the great sport of Sailing. Originally based at the Sheraton hotel, the Academy has taught thousands of people to sail; some started very young and continued to progress as far as sailing for their country in international competitions, others have chartered yachts and explored all corners of the globe. All of the Academy staff are British qualified and highly experienced instructors. Safety has always been, and remains paramount during all activities with Regatta Sailing Academy; our safety equipment is regularly inspected and tested and safety boats are always on hand. Moving to the Intercontinental hotel in 2006 as the academy expanded, a wide range of activities were offered including dinghy sailing and yacht courses. The Academy gained Royal Yachting Association accreditation in December 2012 and offers sailing tuition to everyone from the age of 6 and above. Starting with the basic Stage 1 for juniors through to the highly advanced Yachtmaster course and all courses in between. In 2014 Regatta Sailing Academy gained further RYA accreditation allowing them to offer powerboat courses which are held on Regattas training boats from the Pearl Qatar or a customers own boat. Now based in Katara Cultural Village, the Academy is continuing to grow with windsurfing instruction being offered for all ages. Regatta Sailing Academy organises its own Regattas throughout the year and is also proud to participate in the National Day and Sports Day sailing events of Qatar. The Regatta Sailing Academy appreciates the generosity of their corporate sponsors which enables them to maintain their high quality training fleet and continue to offer a wide variety of water sports activities. The Academy also has a base in the Four Seasons Marina where their two racing yachts are moored. Keelboat, yacht cruising and International Award training is held from this location. The International award has three levels which pushes teenagers to work as a team, take responsibility and prompts time management. The expedition parts of the award follow intense training and culminate with the group sailing to Bahrain, Abu Dhabi or Dubai. The Academy offers sailing experiences and team building events for local businesses which are tailored to meet clients requirements. The RYA Yachtmaster and Day Skipper programmes are internationally respected qualifications which allow the holders to skipper their own yachts around the world.
