We've dealt with -30 temperatures in the Midwest, and more than 170 inches of yearly rain in Southeast Alaska. Snow, rain, wind, saltwater, and humidity, all take their toll on buildings. In our years of remodels and repairs, we know what works and we know what doesn't. Based on years of training and experience, we combine the best methods to provide the most durable, low maintenance, and cost-effective construction we can. Here are a few examples: Grading: Builders are notorious for saving a few dollars and building foundations too low to the ground. Without at least 6 of space between dirt and siding, and another 6 of positive slope away from the foundation, it's a recipe for trouble. We pre-plan each project to keep wood away from dirt and keep water away from buildings. Reinforcement: All of our exterior concrete gets steel reinforcement. Most PNW concrete contractors skip the rebar, but we do it anyway. Why? Because steel reinforcement might make the difference between 10 years of crack-free concrete and 50 years of crack-free concrete. Flashing/ drainage: We go far beyond building code standards to waterproof our windows and doors. These notoriously leaky areas can quickly ruin buildings in the Pacific Northwest. We carefully flash them to ensure a leaky window will never ruin the wall below it. We also use drainable house wraps to ensure that any moisture behind the siding can escape quickly. Solid lumber: If the option is double 212's or a single 412, we use the 412. If the post should be a 44 or a 66, we use the 66.
