The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, usually referred to simply as the University of Athens (UoA), is a public university in Zografou, Athens, Greece. It has been in continuous operation since its establishment in 1837 and is the oldest higher education institution of the modern Greek state and the first contemporary university in the Eastern Mediterranean. Today it is one of the largest universities by enrollment in Europe, with over 100,000 registered students. Research in the University of Athens includes almost all research interests. Such research in the university is associated with that conducted by the hospitals and research institutes of the metropolitan area, including the National Research Center for Physical Sciences Demokritos, the National Research Foundation (EIE), the National Observatory of Athens, the Hellenic Pasteur Institute, the Alexander Fleming Biomedical Sciences Research Center, the Athens High Performance Computing Laboratory, the National Centre for Marine Research (NCMR) and the Foundation for Biomedical Research of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA). Research conducted in the institutes of the metropolitan area of Athens accounted for more than 50% of the ISI-indexed scientific publications coming from Greece. The Department of Informatics and Telecommunications has been ranked continuously among the 100 most important research institutes in the field of Computer Science, according to Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Throughout its history, a sizeable number of University of Athens alumni have become notable in many varied fields, both academic and otherwise. Moreover, 2 Nobel prize-winners have studied or taught at Athens, with both their prizes being in Literature. Fifteen Greek prime ministers and three Greek presidents have studied at the University of Athens.

As the largest university in Greece, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is a vibrant academic institution located in the heart of Thessaloniki. Its main campus spans 33.4 hectares and hosts 10 faculties comprising 40 schools, along with one independent school. With over 73,000 students—including 65,000 undergraduates and more than 8,000 postgraduates (nearly 4,000 at the doctoral level)—the university is a hub of research, learning, and innovation. The academic community includes 2,000+ faculty members, supported by a dedicated team of researchers, lab staff, language instructors, and technical personnel. Some academic and administrative units are located off-campus, including facilities in other regions, to meet specific operational and educational needs. The Aristotle University continues to play a pivotal role in shaping higher education and research in Greece and beyond.

In order to investigate the mechanisms of biocolloids fate and transport in environmental systems as well as their effect on public health, a University of Patras interdisciplinary group formed the Interuniversity Network for Biocolloid Fate and Transport in Environmental Systems (BIOMET) with coordinator the Environmental Engineering Laboratory (UPeel) in the Civil Engineering Department of University of Patras. Τhe Network consists of six more laboratories: the Hygiene Laboratory in the Medicine Department, the Atmospheric Physics Laboratory in the Physics Department, the Research Group of Environmental Chemistry with Emphasis on Liquid Pollution in the Department of Chemistry, the Transport Phenomena and Physicochemical Hydrodynamics Laboratory in the Chemical Engineering Department, the Environmental Processes Engineering Laboratory in the Chemical Engineering Department and the Zoology Laboratory in the Biology Department. The BIOMET network will support new scientists in thematic areas concerning water pollution from biocolloids, will cooperate with the local community, public and private operators, Greek as well as international research institutes and groups with main aim the scientific knowledge development for the people standard of living improvement.
