PERMACEL was originally founded in 1927 as a division of Johnson & Johnson to produce and market masking tapes. In 1982, the company was acquired by Avery International Corporation. In 1988, Permacel was acquired by Nitto Denko Corporation and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Nitto Denko for the express purpose of manufacturing and selling various industrial tapes. The company has earned a reputation as a pioneer in the field of pressure-sensitive tapes by developing new products through innovative proprietary technologies. Currently, Permacel develops, manufactures, and markets 350 kinds of tapes used for the manufacturing process in the Electrical, Electronics, Automobile, Aerospace, and Graphic Art industries. In joining the Nitto Denko group, Permacel also began producing a variety of Nitto Denko products. With its expanded product line, Permacel serves an increasingly broad market. The company has plants in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, and Lakewood, New Jersey as well as sales and converting bases in Los Angeles and Detroit.
