Parents Information

Parents in the Know was founded by Dr. Diana Brannon after conducting a study of the materials available on school websites for parents. The study included 745 elementary, middle, and high school websites. The schools surveyed represent 109 districts, or 16% of schools in Illinois. Much of what was found on school websites for parents pertained to policy, including information about routines, school programs, teachers, and internet resources. Many of the sites surveyed were wonderful places to learn about schools and even visit classrooms virtually. However, many schools provided little practical information for parents that would help fill the gaps of training and understanding that often limit parents' involvement in their child's schoolwork. Therefore, most districts surveyed would benefit from providing additional practical and concrete information for parents about what parents can do to help their child succeed in school. The writers at Parents in the Know are all experienced teachers. Each article is based on research into best practice and an appreciation for parents' role as their child's first and most important teacher. Dr. Brannon is a Professor in Education, a Nationally Board Certified teacher with 11 years classroom experience, a published author and presenter on a variety of issues involving parents, teachers, and education.
