Once dismissed as a lay-by on the M6, the comment does not do justice to the long & proud history of Orrell RUFC nor its ambitious plans for the future. Founded in 1927, the club has gone from a nomadic existence to greatness back to a nomadic existence; from amateur to professional to amateur- but even in times of trouble, the black & amber of the club colours have never stopped playing nor has it ever lost it’s drive and determination - not only to grow & develop but live by its values of participation, community and excellence. During Orrell’s rise to the top tier of club rugby, they provided numerous players for Lancashire, including Des Seabrook, who famously coached the North of England to victory over the All Blacks in 1979. The Club has also produced a both England & British Lions players. The club has continued to steadily grow & develop not only the players but the coaching staff & an extremely successful Mini and Junior Section. It has also seen it’s dream for a new home (with partners Winstanley Park Cricket Club) begin to flourish, with planning permission for 2 rugby pitches and a cricket pitch on land next door to Winstanley College. The facility will also offer a much-needed sport and community facility by offering new opportunities for local people (young and old) to participate in sport and recreational activities. Notable former players include: Dewi Morris, England & British Lions Austin Healey, England & British Lions Nigel Heslop, England Andy Craig, Scotland Nick Easter, England Wes Davies, (Rugby League international with Wales) Gerry Ainscough, England Simon Haughton, England Rugby League International & Super League Grand Final Winner John Carleton, England & British Lions Steve So'oialo, Samoa Neil McCarthy, England Brian Ashton, England Alfie To'oala, Samoa Rodd Penney, England Richard Welding, England Sam Reay, England Peter Anglesea, England Dan Luger, England international, British and Irish Lion Bob Kimmins, England
