The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) operates independently of government and has a legislated mandate to serve the privacy and access interests of Albertans. The mission of our office includes: - Advocating for the privacy and access rights of Albertans - Ensuring public bodies, health custodians and private sector organizations uphold the access and privacy rights contained in the laws of Alberta - Providing fair, independent and impartial reviews in a timely and efficient manner. Created in 1995, the OIPC provides independent oversight of Alberta's three access and privacy laws: - The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP Act) came into force in 1995. It provides individuals with the right to access information held by public bodies while regulating how public bodies collect, use and disclose personal information. - The Health Information Act (HIA) came into force in 2001. It provides individuals with the right to access health information held by health professionals (custodians) while regulating how health professionals collect, use and disclose health information. - The Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) came into force in 2003. It provides individuals with the right to access their own personal information held by a private organization while regulating how private organizations collect, use and disclose personal information.
