The Cheshire Phoenix is a professional basketball team based in Ellesmere Port. Founded in 1984, they are members of the British Basketball League (BBL) and from the 2015/2016 season will play their home games out of the newly built Cheshire Oaks Arena at Ellesmere Port Sports Village. Originally founded as the Ellesmere Port Jets between 1984-1988, they changed their name to Cheshire Jets in 1988. In 1994 the club moved to the Northgate Arena in Chester at the same time as changing their name to the Chester Jets, this was the clubs most successful period. 2007 saw the club go back to their name from 1988 as the Cheshire Jets, to cover the whole county of Cheshire. Following financial difficulty, the club was saved by fans and local businesses in 2012 which saw the club rebranded to Cheshire Phoenix, a Community Interest Club (CIC). Cheshire Phoenix are represented by a board who run the club day to day, and have the support of a dedicated volunteer base who are the heart and soul of the club. The Cheshire Phoenix club strive to be as successful off as they do on the court, with the work they do in the community, working on a variety of projects aimed at getting young people active, playing basketball and promoting overall healthy life styles. This is done through the Project Hub and Hoops 4 Health programs. The club's aims are ambitious, to improve year on year and continue to build on the solid foundations that have been placed over the past 3 years.
