Insgesamt zählen 21,1 Millionen Menschen zur Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland (EKD), sie sind in ihren Kirchengemeinden zuhause. Sie unterstützen den Ratsvorsitzenden, Gremien und Kommissionen, organisieren die Zusammenarbeit der 20 Landeskirchen, geben Impulse zur Weiterentwicklung und gestalten mit ihrer Öffentlichkeitsarbeit das gesellschaftliche Gesicht der evangelischen Kirche. Im EKD-Kirchenamt werden auch die internationalen Beziehungen der evangelischen Kirche verwaltet, zum Weltkirchenrat ebenso wie zu den mehr als 100 deutschsprachigen Auslandsgemeinden.
