NWAC is one of five National Aboriginal Organizations that works to improve the lives, socioeconomic, and health status of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit populations in Canada through awareness raising initiatives, political advocacy efforts, and promotion of equitable engagement in political and other processes that impact them. The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) is founded on the collective goal to enhance, promote, and foster the social, economic, cultural and political well-being of Aboriginal women within Aboriginal and Canadian societies. With 35 years of service, NWAC is proud to speak as a voice for Aboriginal women from coast to coast to coast. NWAC is the only NAO solely responsible for representing the concerns and interests of Aboriginal women in Canada. Given that Aboriginal women carry an overwhelmingly disproportionate burden of ill health, experience more violence and abuse than any other sector of the population, and are incarcerated at ever increasing rates, it follows that their needs are not being met. Until such time that Aboriginal women and their families benefit equally from the economic, social, and educational opportunities available in Canada, there will be a continued need for organizations like NWAC. The men and women who are employed at NWAC are committed to creating sustainable change in families, communities, and nations, in an effort to protect our future leaders from intergenerational traumas too often associated with Aboriginal peoples in this country.
