The creation of Fundación Museo de la Moda began in 1999 by the initiative of Jorge Yarur Bascuñán, grandson of Juan Yarur Lolas, President and Founder of Yarur Manufacturas Chilenas de Algodón, and son of Jorge Yarur Banna, President of Banco de Crédito e Inversiones BCI. The space that houses the museum’s exhibitions is the Yarur Bascuñán family’s former residence. The Yarur Bascuñán residence was built between 1960 and 1962 by Chilean architects Carlos Bolton, Sergio Larraín, Luis Prieto, and Jaime Lorca.  The space is an example of modernist architecture, manifestly influenced by the avant-garde ideas of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Like many minimalist constructions, it possesses remarkably Japanese architectural components, such as the expansive larch-shingled roof and the beautiful reflecting pool at the entrance of the home. Mario Matta Echaurren, brother of the surrealist painter Roberto Matta, was in charge of the interior decoration of the home. The Museo de la Moda was founded within this residence. In 2007, after seven years of work, the conversion of the Yarur Bascuñán family home into a museum was completed. The venue transformed its use while preserving the architecture and original spaces of the house, making minimal interventions to meet the requirements of conservation and exhibition to the extent of international museological and museographical recommendations. The entire collection is safeguarded under suitable conditions (temperature-controlled, humidity-controlled, UV protected, lighting-controlled, anti-pollution filtered, protected) that guarantee its preservation for future generations. This collection began in part with the legacy of Jorge Yarur Bascuñán's parents and is primarily made up of clothing and decorative arts from the 1950s and 1960s.
