Menzies exists to perform internationally significant medical research leading to healthier, longer and better lives for Tasmanians. We focus on a range of common diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, dementia, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, mental health, multiple sclerosis (MS), osteoporosis, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s disease and stroke. Menzies conducts research that relies on the unique, stable base that characterises Tasmania's population. We also undertake nationwide studies and collaborate with interstate and international researchers. Our context is an island community that has limited funding for health care and specific challenges relating to disadvantage. Our research is community-focused and takes a 'bench-to-bedside' approach that is aimed at improving patient care and clinical outcomes by translating knowledge into clinical and policy actions, and through the commercial applications of discoveries. We educate and train future research scientists, clinicians and health professionals.
