The Mathaf Research department offers programs that are designed to generate, enable and circulate fresh approaches to the understanding of issues on Modernity and its objects. Initiatives include academic fellowships, scholars in residence, symposia and conferences, and an Encyclopedia of Modern Art and the Arab World. Mathaf promotes research aimed at studying Mathaf's collection, documentation and digitization of archives and provide scholarly publication support. Mathaf Research serves as a platform for collaborative and interdisciplinary research and encourages the use of Mathaf as a space of learning beyond the school context. The Research Department launched its Encyclopedia of Modern Art and the Arab World in 2014 as a concept and framework that supports not only research, education, curatorial and collection departments, but also the international field of scholars dedicated to Modern art from the Arab world.
