Literacy Source Information

Literacy Source teaches basic skills - reading, writing, math, computers, and English - to adults so they can be successful in work and life. One out of 6 adults in our state lacks these basic skills and can't get a livable-wage job, so our approach is to meet people where they are, regardless of their educational background, skill level or language proficiency. We help students develop these skills with very small classes and private tutoring. And since most of our students are low-income, the costs of our programs are fully covered for students. We are a not-for-profit organization. We receive the same federal funding that community and technical colleges get for their basic skills and ESL programs, but the majority of our funding actually comes from individual donors, foundations, and city grants. Also, we've been around for 26 years and have a strong history of success in recruiting and training volunteers to tutor and teach classes. That's not just an effective way to keep costs down, it's an important part of how we engage the community in understanding our mission, which is to build a more literate and self-sufficient community.
