KDDI R&D Laboratories are always challenging for innovation in pioneering next-generation technologies for future rich communication societies. What will be the future rich communications society? It should be a world where people access to communications networks at any time, no matter where they are, with almost telepathic levels of convenience. As one initiative to achieve this goal, KDDI has come up with the Ultra 3G concept. Communications networks have traditionally been created for the stance of telecom carriers; in the Ultra 3G world, however, networks have no distinction or restrictions, whether they are fixed or mobile. Customers won’t even be aware that they are using networks. It may sound paradoxical, but for maximum usability, service providers need to build highly advanced networks, enhance reliability and significantly increase processing performance. At the same time, they must develop advanced service applications by converging fixed, mobile communications and broadcasting (the so-called Fixed Mobile Broadcast Convergence, or FMBC for short). It is very important for the users to provide accessible and user-friendly services without any complication. KDDI R&D Laboratories continue to pursue its creative vision “challenge for innovation” for achieving its challenging goals that provide the advanced and universal technologies. It is our motivation to promote R&D on advanced technologies look beyond the present for establishing rich communications society, and it is our dream to contribute to make everyone be happy all over the world.
