Based in Surabaya, East Java, Jawa Pos is one of the biggest newspapers in Indonesia. Number one in readership according to Nielsen Media Research at 2014. History: Jawa Pos was founded by The Chung Shen on July 1st, 1949, marketing staff in a movie theater in Surabaya. Jawa Pos have its ups and downs. At the end of the 1970’s, Jawa Pos started to freefall. By 1982, the total circulation was only 6.000 copies daily. At the age of 78, The Chung Shen decided that he could no longer run Jawa Pos. None of his three children want to continue the business. So in 1982, he sold Jawa Pos to PT Grafiti Pers, publisher of Tempo Magazine. Eric Samola, president director of PT Grafiti Pers, chose Dahlan Iskan to run Jawa Pos. At the time, Dahlan was Tempo’s head of bureau in East Java. With Dahlan at the helm, Jawa Pos grew rapidly. Now Jawa Pos is Indonesia’s largest media Network, consisting of over 150 publications and television stations. Eric Samola passed away in 2000. Dahlan always said that Eric was more than just a mentor. Eric was his father.
