Indian Navy is an important branch of the Indian armed forces and is responsible for maritime defence, besides safeguarding national interests and maritime security. Formed in the year 1612, the Indian Navy comes under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defence (Navy), with headquarters at New Delhi. Before 1934, the Indian Navy was popular as the Royal Indian Navy. It is headed by the Chief of Naval Staff. Currently, the navy has an active personnel of more than 68,000. There are four important command centers - the Western Naval Command in Mumbai, Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam, Southern Naval Command in Kochi and Andaman and Nicobar Command in Port Blair. It has several training bases spread across the country. Some of the establishments include the likes of INS Agrani, INS Chilka, INS Garuda, INS Hamla, Institute of Naval Medicine, INS Shivaji, INS Venduruthy, Inter Services - NDA, Inter Services - DSSC and Inter Services - NDC. Important office training is conducted at Indian Naval Academy (INA). As for the organisation structure, the key ranks include Admiral of the Fleet, Admiral, Vice Admiral, Commodore, Captain, Commander, Lieutenant Commander, Lieutenant, Sublieutenant, Chief Petty Officer, Petty Officer, Leading Seaman and Ordinary Seaman.
