In 2000, IMC’s network, Viking, was awarded a GSM 1800 license by the Iceland Post and Telecomm Administration (PTA). IMC provides domestic mobile service in Iceland through Alterna, and has coverage in more than 185 countries and territories through its 420 plus roaming relationships with other international operators. In March of 2010, IMC Island launched Alterna, a new company offering local mobile service in Iceland. Branding itself as an alternative to the two prevailing carriers in the area, Vodafone and Síminn. Alterna’s service plans include free incoming calls and texts, free in-network calling and text, and affordable international calling.
