NED University of Engineering & Technology, formerly called the NED Government Engineering College, was established in March 1977 through an act of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh, Pakistan. NED Government Engineering College was set up in 1922 and therefore, it is one of the oldest engineering degree-awarding institutions in Pakistan.
At the time of its inception, the institution was called the Prince of Wales Engineering College. Later, it was renamed in honor of Mr. Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw, who donated a large amount for the construction of the original buildings and laboratories of the engineering college. NED College was initially affiliated with the University of Bombay. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, it was taken over by the Government of Sindh, renamed as NED Government Engineering College, and affiliated to the University of Sindh. Once the University of Karachi was established in 1951, the affiliation of NED College was transferred to it. In 1964, NED College was shifted from its initial location in downtown (City Campus) to the current location on University Road (Main Campus), adjacent to the University of Karachi. Finally, on March 1, 1977, NED Government Engineering College was upgraded to the present NED University of Engineering & Technology.
Today, NED University stands as the guiding beacon of light for the technological transformation of Pakistan into a new era of development and prosperity. Thousands of alumni from the university are serving in engineering and management of major industrial corporations in Pakistan, the Middle East, and beyond. The university administration is actively working to enhance the services and facilities offered to its students and alumni while redefining itself to focus on the technological innovations and engineering services most required by the local industry.
