ICNIRP, the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, develops and disseminates science-based guidance to protect humans and the environment from adverse effects of non-ionizing radiation (NIR). The Commission is a non-profit organization with no industry funding. Its more than 50 Commissioners and scientific experts are not paid for their work but provide their advice on a voluntary basis. The scope of ICNIRP’s remit includes electromagnetic radiation from static, extremely low frequency and radiofrequency fields, to infrared, visible and ultraviolet radiation, and mechanical waves in the form of infrasound and ultrasound. Continuing the work of the International Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation (INIRC) of IRPA (the International Radiological Protection Association), ICNIRP has evolved as an independent, international authoritative body on NIR protection recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the European Union (EU), with its advice used worldwide.
