Previously known as the Teleki László Foundation and the Hungarian Institute for International Affairs, and later the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (HIIA) is a largest foreign policy think-tank in Hungary. HIIA is carrying out active research following the priorities of Hungarian foreign policy. We have six research programs covering Euro-Atlantic Relations, Central Europe, the Middle East, the Far East and Russia, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America and Emerging Challenges (climate change, energy security, terrorism, etc.). Having a permanent staff of about 15-20 full time researchers and a wider network of 25-30 associate fellows, HIIA is present in the Hungarian professional scene with public research reports and analyses, with confidential briefs, studies and other professional materials. The Institute issues the only foreign policy journal of Hungary, the 'Külügyi Szemle' (Foreign Policy Review). The Hungarian Institute of International Affairs is not only engaged in the professional discourse, but we actively shapes domestic public debate on foreign policy issues as well. The Institute organises (mostly) public roundtable discussions, off the record meetings, workshops, smaller and larger conferences in Hungarian and English, and it serves as the exclusive venue for the public lectures and forums of high-ranking foreign delegations visiting the representatives of the Hungarian Government. Our team consist of a healty mix of former and current diplomats, young scholars and researchers, and twice a year, the most talented interns Hungarian universities can offer. Apart from the classic regional focus, our research programs also cover cross-cutting issues. HIIA expert are regularly to be found at various domestic and international conferences, as well as in print, broadcast and online media.
