Hangerman processes between 25 and 50 million hangers per year and packages approximately 75% of the incoming used hangers. The remaining 25% of hangers are either damaged or un-saleable models. These hangers are then sold to recyclers who send the hangers to China for reprocessing. Reprocessing in China has been, for years, much more economical as they can disassemble the hangers and sort them into the various materials such as clear plastic, colored plastic and the metal clip & hooks easier. Many of these hangers are then reprocessed and turned into toys or other products. Since Hangerman - South Africa’s inception in 1986, we have repackaged 317 million hangers and have recycled 8.3 million pounds of hangers into moldable material. Since Hangerman - USA’s inception in 2000, we have repackaged 200 million hangers and have recycled approximately 5 million pounds of hangers. Social Impact: Both in South Africa and the US we contract out a portion of our piece-work to various organizations for physically disadvantaged people, who perform some of the tasks required in the repackaging process. Through using institutions like Goodwill or Suncom Industries that employ disadvantaged people to do the processing of hangers, we bring hope and self esteem to hundreds of people. In Summary: For every million hangers Hangerman recovers we save 420 tons of plastic and 110 tons of metal plus the energy required to produce these materials. Hangerman’s total combined recoveries to date are approximately 20,950 tons of plastic and 1,000 tons of metal.
