A new way of working...
The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) is about making everyday essentials in life more affordable for people in low income households. We do this through a membership scheme that offers regular provisions such as food and toiletries. We also aim to provide help for everyday, bread and butter things such as debt, energy and mobile phones.
People join and become members at their local community hubs that we partner with. Our hubs are projects that are already doing great work in their communities. They are really passionate, proactive and committed teams such as independent food banks, schools, housing associations or community centres. And their volunteers are a vital part of our extended team, helping us deliver affordable food in our communities.
TBBT is an innovative way of providing, regular support to people who cannot afford everyday essentials because of the poverty premiums they face simply because of their circumstances.
This is not crisis intervention but a long term, regular supply of affordable, everyday essentials, building long term relationships within the community.
FareShare North East provides perfectly good surplus food to local community groups in the North East of England. This food, donated by both retailers and producers, would normally go to waste. Food is delivered to the FareShare North East warehouse, and then either delivered to or picked up by member charities.
Community and charitable organisations across Sunderland, Newcastle, Northumberland, Gateshead, South Tyneside, East Durham, Stockton on Tees and Middlesbrough benefit from FareShare. These organisations distribute good food to communities which, due to economic and social exclusion, would either have an absence of food or a poor diet. Such groups include centres for victims of domestic violence, homeless organisations, lunch clubs for older people and kids clubs. Last year, FareShare North East provided food for over 650,000 meals in the region, and saved more than 270 tonnes of food going to waste thanks to a team of dedicated volunteers. FareShare North East would welcome enquires from both food organisations wishing to donate as well as new community projects that would like to receive food.
FoodCycle community meals bring people together for good food and conversation. We serve free, wholesome meals made from food that would have gone to waste, prepared by volunteers and open to everyone. FoodCycle is about more than food – we create a cycle of positive change – reducing food waste and hunger, tackling loneliness, supporting mental health and encouraging healthy eating and sustainable living.
