GrowNYC is a hands-on non-profit with a mission to empower all New Yorkers with equitable access to fresh, locally grown food and neighborhood green spaces, reduce waste, and care for the environment.
GrowNYC was originally created in 1970 as the Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC). Born out of the spirit of the first Earth Day, CENYC was initially a policy-based organization, writing comprehensive reports about quality of life issues like air quality, traffic, and noise.
Today, we serve over 3 million New Yorkers annually through a robust network of sustainability programs and resources. Our programs focus our efforts on four key areas: Food Access & Agriculture, Green Spaces, Zero Waste and Education.
Since 1970, GrowNYC has been rolling up its sleeves alongside NYC residents to:
- Provide access to healthy, fresh, local food for all New Yorkers
-Grow and maintain vibrant green spaces and community gardens.
-Help New Yorkers recycle more and reduce waste.
-Create the next generation of environmental leaders through hands-on education programs.
Green City Force (GCF) is an AmeriCorps program that engages young adults from low-income communities across NYC in national service related to the environment. Our holistic workforce and youth development model prepares these young leaders for sustainable careers while building a greener city. Since GCF's founding in 2009, we have engaged more than 1,000 young adults in our signature Service Corps program, constructed 6 urban farms in NYC public housing developments, and educated tens of thousands of New Yorkers on issues related to food, waste, water and energy.
Since our founding in 1991, The Food Project has grown into a nationally-recognized organization that works at the intersection of youth, food, and community. Each year we hire 120 teens to steward our farms, because we believe that food is a unique vehicle for creating personal and social change.
We believe that everyone should have access to fresh, local, healthy, affordable food regardless of age, gender identity, socio-economic background, or the color of your skin.
Over the past 25 years, we have grown from a single two-acre farm in Lincoln, Mass., to an organization that now maintains 70 acres of both urban and suburban farms in five towns on the North Shore and in Greater Boston.
The Food Project aims to transform our food system into an equitable and inclusive model that is community-controlled and supports food justice for all. Working in partnership, we can realize the vision of a more sustainable and just food system.
