In 1995, Charles Phan and his family opened a small 45-seat restaurant in the Mission district in San Francisco with a focus on quality Vietnamese street food in a modern setting. With Phan's innovative design and bold flavors, The Slanted Door was quickly recognized, locally and nationally, within 3 months of opening. The Slanted Door moved its flagship location to the Ferry Building in 2004.
From the beginning, we have sourced our ingredients from local farmers and purveyors to bring out the best flavors in our foods, while using traditional cooking methods. The Slanted Door has opened a second location in San Ramon and is also coming soon to Napa, CA.
Charles continues to explore different concepts in Vietnamese cooking. He recently opened Chuck's Takeaway, offering quick sandwiches in San Francisco's Mission district. The concept thrives off of Phan's desire for the perfect Vietnamese Banh Mi, using entirely housemade ingredients to create amazing sandwiches. Chuck's Takeaway offers a more casual experience while still maintaining a dedication to quality and fresh ingredients.
Banh Mi Boys first opened its doors to Toronto in 2011. Working out of a small mom-and-pop shop at Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue, three brothers armed with history and knowledge of Vietnamese cuisine began offering savoury hot meats in perfectly-toasted baguettes. It wasn’t long before word-of-mouth got around and what had initially started as a slow-moving venture led to bustling and eager line-up’s out the door.
In 2013, following the successful launch of our flagship location, Banh Mi Boys opened its second restaurant. Following suit with the same menu of Vietnamese Banh Mi, Chinese Steamed Bao’s and Korean-inspired Taco’s, the demand for the modern Banh Mi continued to escalate, naturally paving the way for our third and fourth locations in 2015 and 2017 respectively.
It was only a matter of time before our stores could no longer individually handle the increase in demand. With the brothers’ history of working and managing large-scale food production, we built and equipped our own commissary kitchen – allowing us to continue to develop our food in-house with the same integral and high-quality standards you’re used to.We believe in sharing the passion that created this unique restaurant with the world.
