Freespace Dance Information

Freespace Dance is a contemporary modern dance company renowned for creating emotionally driven work with a bold athletic signature style. Artistic Director, Donna Scro, is a former principal dancer with the Nikolais/Louis Dance Company and a founding member of Sean Curran Company. Freespace Dance holds annual New York seasons at Danspace/St. Marks Church, The Salvatore Capezio Theater at Peridance, Ailey Citigroup Theatre, and Dance Theatre Workshop. The company has appeared at venues throughout the region including The Ailey Citigroup Theater, Joyce SoHo, Rutgers University, and Raritan Valley Community College. The company has also enjoyed regular performances at festivals such as the Downtown Dance Festival, Dancers Responding to AIDS: The Remember Project, International Dance Festival, Dance NJ’s Show Up and Dance Festival, DNA’s Raw Material, DUMBO Dance Festival, Cool New York Festival, and the Jersey Moves Festival at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. The company has also been presented at the Oskar Schindler Center for the Performing Arts for the past 5 years. National touring has included performances at Jacob’s Pillow, San Diego State University, SUNY Purchase, Wells College, Southern Utah State University, The Kaplan Theater in Houston, Texas, and internationally at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Freespace has received grants from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, New Jersey State Council on the Arts, The Hyde and Watson Foundation, The New Jersey Cultural Trust and The American Music Center. Artistic Director, Donna Scro is the recipient of a 2008 Fellowship from New Jersey State Council on the Arts, for excellence in choreography. Currently, Freespace Dance is on the main roster of Jodi Kaplan & Associates, a boutique agency that represents top dance companies throughout the nation. Freespace Dance is an open forum designed to collaborate and create, teach and encourage, invite and dance.
