Excelsior Athletic Training exists to help young athletes train and compete without being pushed too far, too soon. For 30 years I've worked across club, school and national governing body settings — as a strength and conditioning coach at two Olympic Games, and as the coach behind British weightlifting champions — and I now bring that experience to coaches, PE teachers, physiotherapists and sports partnerships working with young athletes day to day. I run CPD workshops and seminars for coaches and PE teachers on speed, strength and long-term athletic development — practical sessions built from three decades of what actually works with young athletes, not theory borrowed from adult programmes. I also work directly with clubs and schools on programme design and coach mentoring, helping them build a genuine long-term athletic development pathway rather than bolting a strength session onto existing training. A growing part of my work is return-to-play consultancy: bridging the gap between physio discharge and a young athlete's full return to competitive sport. Too many rehab pathways stop at "pain-free" rather than "match-ready" — I work with physiotherapists and clinics to close that gap properly. Alongside the coaching and consultancy, I write and speak on youth athletic development: four books (Training Young Athletes, Get Stronger, Run Faster, Jump Higher), the Coaches' Corner newsletter, and contributions to HMMR Media. I also write for GAIN Swim and act as their Editor-in-Chief. My background includes an MSc from Brunel University, S&C work preparing athletes for Paralympic Games, and time with the RFU, RFL, Exeter Chiefs and Millfield. I'm a British Masters weightlifting champion myself, and hold a 4th Dan in karate. If you're a coach, PE teacher, physiotherapist, or part of a County or Active Sports Partnership working with young athletes, that's who this page — and this work — is for.
