Erasmushuis Information

The Erasmus House, one of Brussels' oldest Gothic houses (1460-1515), had Erasmus of Rotterdam, the “Prince of the Humanists”, as a guest in 1521. The museum illustrates the history of the Renaissance in Europe through paintings, engravings (Albrecht Dürer, Hugo Van der Goes, Cornelis Metsys...) and ancient editions of Erasmus’ works. Behind the museum, the Medicinal Garden and Philosophical garden are a source of both pleasure and knowledge. The Beguinage was inaugurated as a museum in the smallest Beguinage in Belgium, founded in 1252, where beguines used to reside. These two buildings surround an enclosed garden which provides a view of the Gothic Collegiate church of Saints Peter and Guidon. This exceptionally well conserved, studied, and restored architectural complex will be open to the public from mid-September 2022 until the new museum project is put in place. The museums organizes conferences, concerts, contemporary and historical exhibitions, educational activities, guided tours upon reservation and publishes books.
