The Environmental Studies Institute (ESI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that performs consulting, contract, commissioned, and pro bono work on all aspects of the environment and sustainable development. ESI selects projects based on three criteria: The project must help nature. The project must help people. The project must stand a reasonable chance of success. ESI is non-ideological and non-political. It's work is strictly evidence-based, on the belief that politicizing science is harmful to society in general and the environmental movement in particular. Founded in 1981, ESI's initial work focused on the hazards of nuclear waste disposal at sea. ESI has since contributed to: a worldwide ban on ocean disposal of nuclear wastes nuclear non-proliferation understanding nuclear accidents prohibiting nuclear submarine disposal at sea sustainable development climate change protecting biodiversity global ban on persistent organic pollutants reducing marine pollution restoration ecology ESI's current projects are in sustainable development, climate change, and restoration ecology. ESI operates by assessing and organizing the expertise needed to successfully complete each project and then assembling it from academia, environmental organizations, and the business world. ESI has worked with numerous governments (U. S., South Pacific) and territories (Saipan, Guam), UN agencies such as the Alliance of Small Island States and the Group of 77 developing nations, non-governmental organizations such as the Foundation for International Law and Development, the World Wildlife Fund, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace International, Greenpeace USA, and many local councils and organizations.
