Emerald Community House Information

Emerald Community House is one of a network of Community Houses in the Shire of Cardinia. Established in 1977, ECH was one of the first houses to be part of the broader Neighbourhood House movement involved in community development. Emerald Community House is centrally situated in the Main Street of Emerald and is recognised as a vibrant and valued part of the community. We provide a supportive and welcoming environment where people can meet, exchange ideas and gain skillls, knowledge and confidence. As an incorporated not-for-profit organisation, ECH is managed by an elected Commitee of Management comprised of users of the House and interested local residents. The staff manages the activities of the House. The staff develops the training programs and workshops, run the children's programs and support volunteer staff and our membership base. Tutors and facilitators are employed on a sessional basis to run courses and workshops. Volunteers provide invaluable support with community development activities, administration duties, child care and as committee members. A wide range of community interests and needs is reflected in the education programs offered at the House and includes leisure pursuits such as yoga, art, music, language, bushwalking, as well as vocational training, adult literacy, computer courses and disability support programs. House facilities are hired by individuals, community and business groups. Emerald Community House receives funding from the Department of Planning and Community Development, Department of Human Services, Learn Local (formerly ACFE) and Cardinia Shire. Funding assists with the running of the House and subsidise some adult education courses. Other courses are self funded. Cardinia Shire provides and maintains the exterior premises. We are always seeking ways to strengthen the community and raise additional funds to cover ECH building upgrades and maintenance, festivals, events and House activities.
