Embarcadero Media, founded in 1979 by CEO Bill Johnson, operates four community newspapers, six community websites and publishes specialty publications and digital media enterprises on the San Francisco Peninsula and in the East Bay. The company employs approximately 75 people at its headquarters in Palo Alto and its East Bay office in Pleasanton. Embarcadero Media publishes the Palo Alto Weekly, Mountain View Voice, The Almanac in Menlo Park and the Pleasanton Weekly. It also operates comprehensive 24/7 news and information community websites in those areas, as well as in Danville and San Ramon. The publications and websites serve some of the most affluent and highly educated communities in the nation, home to many Silicon Valley executives, venture capitalists, high tech entrepreneurs and nationally-recognized scientific and educational leaders. In January, 1994, the company's flagship paper, the Palo Alto Weekly, became the first newspaper in the United States to publish its entire editorial content on the World Wide Web. Embarcadero Media and its newspapers and websites are highly respected throughout the state and have received numerous awards for editorial and design excellence, including General Excellence and Best Web Site multiple times from the California Newspaper Publishers Association. The company is deeply committed to serving its communities, and has made grants totalling over $4 million to local non-profit organizations through its annual holiday fund campaigns. In 2009, the company completed construction of its headquarters building in Palo Alto, a three-story "green" office that was the city's first newly-constructed LEED gold-rated building. The company is independent and locally-owned by Johnson, a Palo Alto resident, and 30 other individual shareholders.
