DesignSpace Africa was established in 2009 by Executive Director Luyanda Mpahlwa, partner of MMA Architects of 12 years, taking the Cape Town Studio of MMA Architects at that time into the new firm. DesignSpace Africa is a team of 20 driven professionals under the leadership of Luyanda Mpahlwa who collaborate on developing design ideas integrating architecture, urban design, interior, and architectural graphic design. The team of DesignSpace Africa has been successfully collaborating on various projects since 1997 and has been publicly recognized for its work: Award of Excellence from the South African Institute of Architects for the South African Embassy in Berlin for the Department of Public Works and the Department of Foreign Affairs, 2006 Curry Stone Design Award from the University of Kentucky, USA for the 10×10 Design Indaba Low Cost House, 2008 Nomination for the 2009 Index Awards in Denmark for the 10×10 project, 2009 Completed projects include the Cape Town International Airport for ACSA, the German Embassy Residences in Cape Town and the Khayelitsha Primary Schools in the townships of Cape Town. The 10×10 Project, designed for the 2007 Design Indaba has created international hype, marking the renaissance of traditional African building techniques.
