Our purpose is to provide a constructive game development culture for students to achieve professional and personal goals. With alumni working at AAA (Blizzard, Blindsquirrel) and indie studios (Astronaut T-Rex), VGDA is where students become game developers. Members can complete games on production teams and engage in administration projects that often cross paths with professional developers, studios, and game development clubs across California. VGDA co-founded the "Student Game Developer Alliance" (SGDA) with game dev clubs across California to organize an annual SGDA Summit; the first event of its kind bringing together 200+ students and industry professionals for a day of learning, networking, and inspiration for students! SGDA continues to create inspiring events for student devs just as VGDA continues to create game developers at Cal State Long Beach. VGDA disciplines include: - BUSINESS (Project Management, Outreach, Marketing, Finance, Event Planning, HR, etc.) - GAMEPLAY DESIGN (Level Design, Systems Design, Technical Design, UX, etc.) - ART (Illustration, 2D/3D Animation, Concept Art, Graphic Design, UI Design, Character Design, Environment Design, etc.) - SOUND (Music Composition, Sound Design, SFX Recording, Voice Over Recording and Casting) - TECHNICAL (Gameplay Programming, Data Systems, UI, Technical Art) - NARRATIVE DESIGN (Game Writing, Scriptwriting, Worldbuilding, Environmental Narrative, etc.) - JOURNALISM (Photo Journalism, Interviewing, Writing, Industry News, Event News) - VIDEO PRODUCTION (Cinematography, Editing, Makeup, Production Assistants, etc.) - VOICE ACTORS - and MORE Like any sustainable organization, we recognize the secret to success is a constructive perspective when it comes to failure. We believe our constructive culture enables VGDA to achieve and will continue to do so for years to come.
