C.S. Lewis was a strong believer that education "is not so much about providing information, as cultivating habits of the heart". At CBCC we acknowledge the importance of cultivating healthy habits of the heart and the mind as being a crucial part of our students' journey as they progress from Kindy all the way to Year 12. We know that rich and holistic education consists of more than teaching academia; it involves revealing brilliance and equipping students to flourish, now and in their future. It is our goal to foster a wonderful, open environment where students are socially competent and holistically equipped to become: Successful learners Confident and creative individuals Active and informed citizens. Education and Psychology expert Helen McGrath found that "the best way to teach social skills is through direct teaching and supported practice. The Bible encourages us to, "take these commands to heart and keep them in mind (Deuteronomy 11:18). Heart Matters are moral habits, intelligences, mental thinking, attitudes and actions that develop inner character of the heart of the student: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-control. Brain Matters are learnable intelligences or habits that develop thinking abilities and help students become lifelong learners: Cooperation, Positivity, Conflict Resolution, Grit, Choices, Excellence, Loyalty, Risk-Taking, Focus. Each of our 'Heart Matters' is linked to a 'Brain Matter' and they are strategies that we deliberately introduce to our student body, encourage and cultivate by practice. In every classroom across the College, from Little Joey's (kindergarten) to Year 12, we focus on a particular 'Matter' (eg. kindness) each month. We teach and model these traits to each student in age appropriate ways. We look at the 'God view' of this matter, social skills and practical ways to demonstrate it and then we celebrate achievements.
