Conundrum Press has been focusing on establishing a solid local foundation before expanding into the rest of the region and nation. While our acquisitions are currently regional in scope, they are not intended to be regional in audience. In fact, in these days of increasing globalization, the local is growing in importance. A writer rooted in his own soil, as Flannery O’Connor says, is “someone who is a part of what he writes about and is recognized as such.” She maintains that “the best American fiction has always been regional” because it has “the possibility of reading a small history in a universal light.” And so, our strategy to focus first on the voices and soil of the Rocky Mountain region comes at a good time. It is a land of promise in the national Zeitgeist, and yet it remains overlooked and unexplored on the larger cultural scene. Conundrum Press is already known in Colorado’s community of serious writers to be “on the side” of literature, poetry, and perhaps most importantly, of authors. We are tearing down the walls between poets and public discourse, promoting their return to the role of cultural voice and conscience. We will continue to publish fiction, creative non-fiction, and literary criticism that is good, beautiful, and true. And we will continue to foster a community of readers and authors by caring for the soul and work of the culture creators and by cultivating literacy and the arts in our youth.
