The mission of Communities In Schools in the Lehigh Valley (CIS) is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. CIS is committed to ending the drop-out epidemic in the public school system and ensuring that every student graduates. CIS staff are positioned within schools, where they work cooperatively with the teachers, counselors, and principals, to coordinate a web of comprehensive supports. School-wide, group-level, and individualized supports serve to improve students' attendance, reduce suspensions, and improve academic outcomes. CIS case managed supports target students identified as being at-risk of dropout. Through the power of caring relationships and community support, CIS staff empower these at-risk students to make positive choices for themselves and find success in school and beyond. The variety of services CIS delivers across Berks, Lehigh, and Northampton counties includes counseling, mentoring, tutoring, support for alternative education, out-of-school time programs, career and college readiness programming, dropout reengagement, and referrals to community-based resources.
