Founded in 1388, the University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest universities in Germany. As a member of the “German U15,” Germany’s association of leading research-oriented universities, it is also among the country’s top-level research institutions. In 2012, the University of Cologne was awarded extensive funding within the framework of the Excellence Initiative, a nationwide competition tendered by the German federal and state governments to promote cutting-edge research and enhance quality in education. The University of Cologne covers a broad spectrum of disciplines. It encompasses six large Faculties: ‘Management, Economics and Social Sciences’, ‘Law’, ‘Medicine’, ‘Arts and Humanities’, ‘Mathematics and Natural Sciences’, as well as ‘Human Sciences’. Currently, approximately 48,500 students are enrolled, taking advantage of a wide variety of courses including joint degree programmes with renowned international partner universities such as Paris-Sorbonne University, University College London, Maastricht University or the Warsaw School of Economics. With about 38,000 students, the University of Hamburg is one of Germany's largest universities. Approximately 650 of the 3,990 academic staff are full professors. About 120 professors work in the Faculty of Medicine or at the University Clinic Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), about 530 work in the other faculties. These are supported by about 5,820 employees working in technical support, libraries, laboratories, health care and administration, with about 3,830 people at the UKE and about 1,990 in the other faculties or the administration. The university is comprised of 150 different buildings throughout the city although its main campus is located in Von-Melle-Park and the surrounding district of Eimsbüttel.

For generations, the University of Mannheim has been preparing students to take on leadership roles in business, academia, and society. One of the university’s strengths in this task is its profile, which is characterized by the economic and social sciences. It is in these fields that the University of Mannheim has repeatedly been ranked as one of the top 20 European research institutions. Staff members at six schools and departments teach and carry out research in Business Administration, Economics, the Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, and Business Informatics and Mathematics. The University of Mannheim's campus is located in the city center of Mannheim and mainly centers around its main campus – the Mannheim Palace (completed in 1760). The university has around 12,000 full-time students, 200 professors, 840 academic and 570 non-academic staff and a total income of more than €123 million in 2018. It is organized into 6 schools.
