CITIES Foundation Information

CITIES is an Amsterdam-based independent organization that invests its energy in active research, community engagement, and initiation of locally specific solutions for global urban problems. Its underlying philosophy is based on co-creation and community-focused projects development. CITIES was founded in in 2008 and since then its team has worked to empower the urban population to commence, drive innovation and integrate scalable initiatives to tackle global problems, such as environmental crisis. It has over five years of experience in managing and activating local communities. From local food systems to sustainable waste management CITIES instigates circularity and commoning practices within the urban environment to integrate scalable solutions into urban economy and ecology for a long-term. As a result, CITIES also operates as an incubator for self-initiated enterprises. CITIES Foundation has researched, developed and implemented multiple publications, local projects and a start-up company which all provide more circular, sustainable and community-led city making approaches. Each initiative comes with multi-actor, a cross-sector collaboration that forms around the co-management with the final users of sustainable practices. CITIES sees tomorrow’s cities being shaped by complex interaction and collaboration between city-makers and citizens alike. This process results in urban knowledge and practice on the local level that offers lessons and implementation strategies on the global level.
