Carrhae Capital is a London headquartered equities specialist with a track record of fundamental investing in Emerging Markets. The firm was founded by Ali Akay in 2011 after a ten-year career as a portfolio manager at SAC, HBK and Goldman Sachs Principle Strategies. Carrhae has 8 investment professionals, a total of 14 employees, including research team members present on-the-ground in China and India to enhance their local knowledge. The investment team generates alpha from a large and persistent dispersion in emerging market equities by investing in highly liquid companies that are unique stories, mispriced or offer secular growth in underpenetrated sectors. Once ideas are generated, the investment process begins with a fundamental analysis of companies and follows a structured format to ensure capital is optimally allocated across the portfolio by investing in the selected long and short stocks in the right size for the right duration. The firm’s investment objective is to generate absolute returns (long-short) and alpha (long-only) from two very distinct products, using one investment process, one research engine and one team. Currently, Carrhae Capital manages two very distinct strategies: (i) Carrhae Capital’s Long / Short Absolute Return generates alpha by investing in the team's best ideas and implements a dynamic portfolio and risk management approach to achieve a low-net; (ii) Carrhae Capital’s Long - Only is benchmark agnostic, concentrated and set up to outperform the index by capturing alpha from investments in the team's best long ideas.
